A group of 8th grade boys from St. Edward set out on another journey to take Jeffersontown Babe Ruth to the Baseball World Series in 2011. Over the past month, 6 boys from the St. Edward 8th grade class were crowned District Champions, State Champions and Regional Finalist in Mattoon, Illinois.
During the District Championships, the boys went 4-0 to win the Louisville Area portion of the tournament over teams from St. Matthews, Valley Sports, Blue Lick and Fairdale. The team was later crowned State Champions with victories over Owensboro, Warren County, Meade County and Hart County. With the District and State victories, the team received a bid to play in the Ohio Valley Regional in Mattoon, Illinois the week of July 25th and week of August 1st.
Members of the team from St. Edward include: Steven Franconia, Tommy Franconia, Vincent Lococo, Ryan Patterson, Ryan Reynolds, Jake Woosley.
The boys arrived in Mattoon, Illinois on Thursday July 28th with teams from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and West Virginia. The 12 teams in the tournament would compete for the Ohio Valley Regional Championship and a bid to the 13-Under Babe Ruth World Series in Clifton Park, NY. Our boys from St. Edward found themselves in a difficult situation dropping the first game to Harris, Indiana. But, they found a way to win 6 games in a row to avoid elimination and made it to the Championship Game. Along the way, the boys from St. Edward found a way to win multiple 1 run ball games including a 1-0 thriller over Janesville, Wisconsin. In the finals, the Jeffersontown Team had to beat Jasper, Indiana two times to earn the trip to the World Series. Our boys were victorious in the first game, beating Jasper, Indiana 9-8 in extra innings but lost the final game to Jasper. It was a long road playing the final 4 games in a 16 hour period – we’re very proud of our boys for representing the St. Edward Family and City of Jeffersontown.
The group of 6 have been crowned State Champions and Regional Finalist two years in a row. They were recently invited to be the “Grand Marshalls” for the Gaslight Festival Parade in September. As you can see, the boys have made a positive influence on a number of people around our community.
Since returning, 5 of the boys started football practice the next day with Coach Bill Young. Steven & Tommy Franconia, Vincent Lococo, Ryan Reynolds and Jake Woosley made the transition to football last Thursday in an effort to prepare for another successful football season – they’re already working hard and planning to FINISH/play for a 4th Toy Bowl Championship.
